STRADDLING THE SEASONS
One objective of Fire yoga is opening and strengthening the HEART.
In moving out of Summer and into Late Summer, the fifth season in the TCM calendar, it’s important to maintain this Heart opening. At the same time, we broaden our focus to re-assert the grounded equilibrium of the SPLEEN (Yin) meridian and extend fully through the front body – governed by the STOMACH (Yang) meridian. These being the two meridians of the EARTH ELEMENT that manifests primarily in Late Summer.
USTRASANA, CAMEL POSE
Ustrasana, Camel pose, is excellent for this. It extends the full length of the Stomach meridian and strengthens the Spleen meridian in both the arms and the inside upper thigh. It also lifts the Heart from the thoracic spine through to the sternum.
If you can place your palms over your heels and reach your fingertips into the “palm” of your feet, connecting with your plantar Heart zones, the circle is completed.
