THE SPINAL SHIATSU IS FOR YOU
in fact
THIS IS FOR EVERYONE

COME ON IN

WHY a SPINAL FOCUS?

The spinal focus allows you to treat a number of things because the amazing truth about treating the spine is that everything else is directly connected to it. Energy zones specific to each meridian point back to the fundamentals and history of our physical and energetic development.
Furthermore, the spine/back is one of the best places to trigger the rest/digest/heal Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). The Shiatsu relaxation factor is maximised and our basic capacity to BE and to DO gets a major re-charge.
This, in turn, provides a stable foundation for our capacity to FEEL, THINK & CONNECT in a positive way.

So it’s fantastic to treat the spine (& back body) thoroughly and deeply at any time of the year. Winter, however, is the season of the WATER ELEMENT and the BLADDER and KIDNEY meridians – guardians of the back body. This makes a treatment targeting this zone – particularly with a spinal focus – all the more relevant in the cold, dark season.

The BLADDER MERIDIAN

The BLADDER is THE structural meridian for the back body and, specifically, governs our spine and nervous system. It is our foundation meridian that holds the whole energetic/material system together. Each meridian has a dedicated energy point along the Bladder meridian.
Because it governs back body – the part that is behind us whichever way we turn – the Bladder meridian energy also holds our history, our long term memory and thence our deep emotions and attachments.

The Bladder is a grand reservoir of energy & associations.
It carries our most profound sense of ourselves
our confidence to simply BE WHO WE ARE.

The KIDNEY MERIDIAN

THE KIDNEY meridian is more like a river where the energy flows freely but, ultimately, is grounded. It governs our balance, supports our upright posture (leaving our hands FREE TO DO stuff) and enables our forward movement.
The Kidney meridian also acts as a deep energy storage unit that houses our fundamental inherited KI (the energy we are born with) and governs our long term motivation.

The Kidney meridian connects us with our
deep MOTIVATION and our ability to ACT:
to DO things
PURPOSEFULLY in the world.

It is “THE EXPRESSION OF IMPETUS

The WAYS of WATER: grounding, balance, movement & action

If you think that this seems like a lot of responsibility for just two meridians, you are right. The physical locations of these two meridian pathways in the body explain a lot about their functions and capacities.

The SPINE the NERVOUS SYSTEM & the ADRENAL GLANDS:
REST, DIGEST & HEAL

The LUMBAR SPINE: MOTOR and NERVOUS SYSTEMS CONNECTING

The Bladder meridian is responsible for the spine and has overall responsibility for the nervous system. The lumbar spine, however, is also an important reflexive and diagnostic zone for the Kidney meridian.
NOTE: as for The Kidney, each meridian has a corresponding zone on the back of the torso.

The kidney organs – which host our adrenal glands – are found adjacent to the mid/upper lumbar spine. The PSOAS MUSCLES run up from the top of the long thigh bones and attach to the spine behind the kidneys. They connect our motor system to our nervous system and are highly susceptible to adrenal stimulation.

When we are under duress the adrenal glands are triggered to release adrenalin and cortisol. Our entire system then kicks into flight / fight Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) mode.

FLIGHT & FIGHT OR REST, DIGEST & HEAL?

The PSOAS MUSCLES are our “knee jerk reaction” hip flexor muscles. They allow us to protect/defend ourselves, prepare to run and, as required, actually run and are key to our musculo-skeletal flight/fight – SNS – response.

Between the psoas muscles and the adrenal glands, the Kidney meridian is strongly implicated in our capacity to switch between the “flight/fight” and the “rest/digest/heal” modes of our Autonomic Nervous System.

This flight/fight state is to do with fear, anxiety, aggression and stress. Although obviously useful when necessary, it is exhausting to maintain and not a state in which anyone wants to be stuck. Unfortunately, 21st Century life is over stimulating and continually generates small scale triggers for the adrenal glands. This, in turn, drains the Kidney meridian energy.

By contrast, the rest/digest/heal Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) mode is ideal for recharging and balancing your system – starting with the Kidney energy.

DRAINING / RE-CHARGING THE KIDNEY ENERGY

Another aspect of the kidney/psoas connection, however, is that “unreleased” psoas muscles pull on the spine and exert pressure on the kidney/adrenal complex. This creates ongoing low-grade adrenal triggering and a self-perpetuating flight/fight loop. The sedentary lifestyle further encourages some degree of tightness as default in the psoas muscles. It then becomes difficult to get them to fully relax.
And if they don’t relax, neither do the kidneys and the Kidney energy then gets depleted.

Kidney meridian energy will not re-charge properly if
the kidney/adrenal complex is activated in flight/fight mode.

THE RELEASE OF THE PSOAS MUSCLES
TURBO CHARGING the shift into rest/digest/heal mode

NOTE: tightness in the psoas muscles also encourages poor posture, interrupted energy flow and overall discomfort: tight hips, sore lumbar spine, rounded upper back and stiff neck. So it is a good idea to release them whenever you can.

BEAT the WINTER BLUES … and MORE

Winter is the deep blue / black season of the Water element. Treating the Bladder and Kidney meridians has implications beyond fatigue, stress and nervous system imbalance.

THE UPSIDE

A healthy, well balanced water element allows you to feel comfortable with who you are – confident in your motivations and in your ability to get things done. You wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed with courage – EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL AS WELL AS PHYSICAL – to take on whatever the day throws at you.

THE MOODY BLUES

The less happy flip side of Winter energy is the ease with which we can slip into anxiety, self-doubt, negativity and possibly fear when the days are short and shivery. This means that our Bladder and Kidney meridians are in need of attention and a treatment targeting them will promote a shift and lift in your Winter outlook.

CONNECTION

Winter is a time for introspection, grounding and DEEP CONNECTION WITH YOURSELF.
It is this connection, supported by the confidence and motivation of a well calibrated Water Element, which enables further connection(s) in and with the larger world.

That said …

Any time is a good time to
INVEST IN YOURSELF

THE SPINAL TREATMENT: is for EVERYONE

ENERGY SYSTEM – OPTIMIZE & BALANCE

The Spinal Zen Shiatsu targets the Bladder & Kidney meridians that track down either side of the spine to optimize and balance your whole energetic system. This is possible because all the meridians usually treated in a Shiatsu session are represented on the foundational Bladder meridian.
They also have dedicated reflective / diagnostic zones on the back body which is governed by the Bladder and encompassed within the treatment.

NERVOUS SYSTEM – SHIFT TO REST/DIGEST/HEAL

A Zen Shiatsu treatment will always strongly encourage the shift from the Sympathetic to the Parasympathetic Nervous System. The Spinal specifically releases the stress response and triggers the rest/digest/heal response in the nervous system by giving focus to the kidney/adrenal/psoas connection in the upper lumbar spine.

SOFT TISSUE RELEASE

Working out from the spine with the physical and energetic techniques of Shiatsu allows for direct release of tension in the soft tissue of the larger “back body” area: upper back, neck, glutes, hamstrings, etc.

EMOTIONAL / PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION – LIFT & RECHARGE

Thinking beyond the Physical: shake off the Watery blues that can come with low Bladder/Kidney energy at any time – but more so in Winter. Enjoy your connections with yourself and the world as you walk through each day with confidence, motivation and courage.

EMOTIONAL / PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION – LIFT & RECHARGE

Think beyond the Physical. Shake off the Watery blues that can come with low Bladder/Kidney energy at any time – but more so in Winter. Enjoy your connections with the world as you walk through each day with confidence, motivation and courage.
